About Just Soap

At the heart of our soap making process is the human-powered bicycle blender. Traditional soap making requires hours of stirring, which left founder Frederick Breeden – a biking enthusiast – free to dream up a more efficient method. He took his vision to an engineer and bicycle builder, and the result was a one-of-a-kind, pedal-powered soap mixer. The bicycle blender helps us make larger batches of handmade soap while keeping our commitment to human-scale, eco-friendly production. Our pedal-powered mixer (along with our solar panels) minimizes our fossil fuel use, making Just Soap a great choice for the earth.

Here's how it works: The bicycle drives a belt that turns a blade in a large stainless steel vat, where we stir together the purest ingredients - saponified olive, coconut, and palm oils, essential oils, and organic herbs and spices. Once the ingredients start to thicken, the magic of soap making has begun, and we pour the mixture into wooden frames to set. A few days later, we cut the bars with a wooden press. Then we cure them for over two months to ensure a long-lasting bar.
